About Us
The Historic Toms River Chess Club
The Toms River Chess Club (TRCC), founded in 1964, has been a cornerstone of the chess community in Ocean County, New Jersey, for decades. Our mission is to promote the game of chess in a welcoming and inclusive environment, providing opportunities for players of all ages and skill levels to learn, play, and compete. We believe in the power of chess to foster critical thinking, strategic planning, and lifelong friendships.

Our main branch meets every Thursday from 5:00 to 9:00 PM at the town hall in Toms River, NJ. Here, members can engage in casual games, participate in USCF-rated tournaments, and benefit from educational lectures by experienced players. In 2024, we expanded our reach by establishing the TRCC Manahawkin branch, which meets every Tuesday from 5:30 to 8:15 PM at 775 E Bay Ave, Stafford Township, NJ.

Throughout our history, we have hosted numerous notable chess events and welcomed famous grandmasters, including Mikhail Botvinnik, Boris Spassky, Eugene Salomon, and most recently Jon Edwards. These experiences have provided our members and our community unparalleled learning opportunities. Our members have achieved great things, from founding prestigious chess set companies, to leading major chess organizations, and several going on to be national tournament organizers.

At TRCC, we are more than just a chess club; we are a community. Our events, such as the Club Championship and the Ocean County Championship, offer competitive excitement, while our annual holiday parties and social gatherings create lasting memories.
